This exhibition presents a specially commissioned
series of portraits by photographer Eileen Perrier. Perrier
describes her work as about individuals and the empathy she
has with them. Many of her photographs form part of evolving
collections, continuing to grow over time. She brings together
what might appear to be random individuals but who are otherwise
united by one defining factor, this can be their occupation,
a physical trait, or a location.
Perrier chose to
make this series of portraits in three busy hair salons, taking
images of each customer moments after their hair has been
styled. By selecting a location where most people at some
time will visit Perrier removes class and age distinctions
and creates a sense of unity amongst the sitters, all sharing
the common experience of having their hair styled. The work
captures a sense of uncertainty in the sitters and charts
the changing demographic, as well as fashions, to be seen
in many towns around the country. Originally shown under the
title 'Southend Trim' the work is not South East Centric,
but concerns the shifting sense of identity for the individual
and their relationship to a wider community.
Eileen Perrier is a
graduate of the Royal College of Art. Her work has been shown
at The Photographer's Gallery, London and was included in
the recent Africa Remix exhibition at the Hayward Gallery,
London. Focal Point Gallery would like to thank the staff
and customers at Grateful Heads, Head Hunters and Legend,
Southend, for agreeing to support this project.
