Andrew Jackson Feb 06 – Apr 07

Andrew Jackson's pictures of Cape Town investigated how, several years after Apartheid ended, the privileged with easy lifestyles still live entirely separately from the impoverished who face daily disadvantage and danger in their townships.  In workshops with Jenny Hill, "Shoebox City" and "A Special Place", we constructed our ideal cities and things that are familiar to us.  Science and Technology week fell during this exhibition and with Tricia North we investigated how to make spinning tops and other visual illusions - "In the Blink of an Eye" workshop.

Hellen Van Meene Dec 06 – Jan 07

Hellen's portraits of adolescent girls and boys were a good starting point for thinking about how we grow up. Public workshops with artists Trisha North and Heidi Wigmore looked at family history and how we present ourselves to others. Lancaster School students made a video of their thoughts on growing up, from a genuine Big Brother chair, with Judy Payne. The video was exhibited in the library during May 2007.

World Circus Sep – Oct 06

John Goto photographed himself and his family as players on a world stage, represented by a Big Top. During this highly popular show the national Big Draw and Southend's “Out of the Box” cultural diversity festival took place. We held public workshops with Heidi Wigmore and Alan Hockett to mark both events.
