Point Gallery 's exhibition, Hidden in Plain Sight , features
the work of British photographer Rik Pinkcombe. Taken in the
US and Britain, Pinkcombe's recent work looks at the external
pressures of modern living and how these pressures shape the
perception of our identity.
Pinkcombe investigates
two areas: who we are and where we are from. In some photographs,
he looks at racial identity through images of borders, bridges,
and traffic stops. These link communities but also symbolise,
the notion of difference. In other works, he looks at class,
mass media and consumerism and the seemingly invisible effects
these have on our society.
The techniques Pinkcombe
uses simulate artificial model worlds: in fact, these ''theatre-images''
are entirely real. They seem staged and ask the viewer to
question who controls this vision and what they are trying
to do with it.
Rik Pinkcombe lives
and works in London and attended school at Blackpool College
( Lancaster University ). The exhibition includes work created
on The AutoResidency at Light Work , USA , 2005 and the ArtSway
& Autograph ABP residency, 2006.
