A weekend of artist-lead activities, temporary artworks and workshops taking place in and around the gallery throughout Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 November.

Saturday 2 November

CREATE YOUR OWN SOUTHEND:
Artist-lead workshop exploring participants’ ideas and memories of the local area, bringing them together in an ‘amusement park in a box’, ready to take home. Based on the upcoming project ’22,420 feet from the wreck’, by Dave Charlesworth and Richard Whitby.

Workshop times: 11:00am, 12:00noon, 1:00pm, and 3:00pm Booking advised, but not essential

BUILD YOUR OWN PUBLICATION:
Based on Mike Nelson’s commission and publication AN INVOCATION - Five hundred and thirty books from Southend Central Library, this artist-lead workshop offers you the opportunity to build your own publication from a large collection of printed matter.

Drop-in workshop between 11:00am and 4:00pm

LIGHT FIREWORKS:
Using digital photography, the whole family can make a human firework, that will flash on to the public screen.

GALLERY TOUR:
Stephen Beasley of Manalo & White Architects and artist Marc Camille Chaimowicz will lead a gallery tour and discuss the relationship between architecture and the decorative in contemporary art.

ARCHIE: Southend-based artist Lee Moon has installed a mobile sound installation in the gallery, which use a chronological perambulator unit to explore pyscho-geographical narratives of the artist’s childhood in Southend.

Following Family Arts Weekend on Saturday, visitors are invited to stay and watch the spectacular Southend Fireworks Display on the Seafront at 7:30pm.

Sunday 3 November

FOUND FOOTAGE LOOPS:
Artist Renee Vaughan Sutherland leads a workshop based based on her offsite commission for the Public Screen, 'Looking at Poems'. Using archive 16mm film stock, you can create your own cine-film animation.

SOUTHEND SUNSHINE WORKSHOP:
Transform your family stories by turning them into sound recordings, prints on acetate and the creation of images on cynotype, or ‘Sun prints’, which use the power of the sun. This three-part workshop will be lead by artists Damien Robinson, Lee Sullivan and Stuart Bowditch.

Workshop times: 11:00am, 12:00noon, 1:00pm, 2:00pm and 3:00pm
