- Artists' Professional Development
Money, Worth and Well-being
- 12 April 2018, 6.30 to 8.30pm
- Twenty One
In this, the second instalment of Focal Point Gallery's professional development programme, we talk money, worth and well-being. Money is never an easy topic for an artist; needing to navigate romantic notions of lone working and surviving on 'the love of it', make the difficult task of negotiating fees even harder. Along with an awareness of what is available in comparison to the artists' worth, knowing where to draw the line presents an all too regular pressure.
How do you value your time? your work? your ideas? How do you approach the conversation when it seems potential employers are avoiding the reality of these things? Or under valuing them. Do you make dispensation to compromise and how do you recognise these times? Many organisations are not looking to take advantage, but are rather suffering the fatigue of cuts themselves, while still trying to offer something exciting, innovative and inspiring.
Leading the discussion will be Dr Richard Whitby, co-opted member of Artists Union England, in conversation with Damien Robinson and Scottee, artists working in many capacities in their fields. They will talk about their own experience, the work they have done or made to highlight free labour in the arts, offer advice and talk about the importance of artists' unions and being a part of a network when you are an independent artist.
The discussion will be followed by an open Q and A.
This event is free and open to all. Book your place here.
This event is kindly supported by the ACE Ambition for Excellence programme New Geographies.
