  • Big Screen Commission:
    Renee Vaughan Sutherland
    'Looking at Poems'
  • 30 September to 30 December 2013
  • The Forum Big Screen, Elmer Square, Southend-on-Sea

The Australian born artist Renee Vaughan Sutherland has collaborated with Southend-based film organisation, The White Bus, to create a film for the large public screen overlooking Elmer Square. Vaughan Sutherland has digitised and re-edited a selection of archival material spanning thirty years, and includes themes from photography and lightning strikes, to poetry and bikers.

By converting celluloid film to a digital output, the archival footage has been manipulated through contemporary editing processes and adapted to a modern screen ratio. The result is a video collage, which embraces the vivid colours and personal characteristics of each reel, as they appear to run horizontally and vertically across the screen.

This is the first in a new quarterly artist's film commission for Focal Point Gallery and will be screened daily until Monday 30 December 2013, in a random sequence between 8am – 10am, 12pm – 2pm and 4pm – 6pm.
